You can find natural beauty in abundance in the mid-Atlantic state of Maryland. Among these are the gorgeous waterfalls that flow mainly within the state parks. Though one can see these cascading beauties in every part of the state, the northern region dominates in number. Having said this, the state’s southern portion is also home to three of the most scenic waterfalls housed in the Swallow Falls State Park.
Falling Branch Falls, also known as Kilgore Falls as it passes through the Kilgore Rocks, is the state’s second-largest. It is a favorite holiday spot in the Rocks State Park, mostly in summer, when people in large numbers throng the place mainly for a swim. The vertical cascade of 17 feet lures one to go splashing in the clear waters.
The parking lot is quite near but come early to get a spot for your vehicle. Also, your dogs too will have fun here, but keep them on leash. During weekdays, you can go just like that. However, prior permission is needed on weekends or from May Day to Labor Day.
Nearest City: About 3 miles from Pylesville
Hiking & Other Activities: It’s a short hike of about 1.3 miles from the parking area. The scenic trail is quite an easy one, perfect for kids also. You can also enjoy picnicking in Rock State Park.
Cascade Falls, though a short one, is quite picturesque. The waterfall, flowing in many cascades into the pool along with the beautiful greenery, is a sight to behold. You can enjoy wading or sitting on a rock and taking in the stunning view. Its beauty doubles furthermore in winters upon freezing.
Nearest City: About 7.5 miles from Elkridge
Hiking & Other Activities: The trail is about 2 miles long and includes crossing a stream. Though relatively an easy hike, apt for beginners, one needs to keep a close watch on the steep and muddy sections along their way. Your dogs, too, can tag along. Apart from this, you can also enjoy picnicking and nature-gazing.
You’ll find this spectacular series of waterfalls and rapids in the bordering states of Maryland, Washington, and Virginia. It gets its waters from the Potomac River, which gushes down to 76 feet, forming multiple layers. To capture the magnificent views of the falls, you can go up to Olmsted Island, nearby known for its rocky terrain, also having steep cliffs facing the river.

Hiking & Other Activities: You can hike the 2- mile long Billy Goat Trail to go right up to the waterfall and get a more scenic view of it. On your way, you will need to scramble past many boulders. Other activities include rock climbing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, birdwatching, and fishing.
The state’s largest, Cunningham Falls, gushes down from a height of 78 feet in the state park of the same name. Earlier known as McAfee Falls, you can see massive boulders and beautiful trees surrounding it. Don’t miss seeing an old house above the waterfall, or the unique rock formation, Dunkard’s Trough, located at its west side, on Big Hunting Creek. This natural trough was used for baptism by the Dunkards, an ancient German religious group.

Hiking & Other Activities: There is a 1.1-mile trail named Cunningham Falls Lower Trail and Cliff Trail Loop that will take you to the waterfall base. You can even visit Hunting Creek Lake at a 5-minute distance from the falls for some enjoyable recreational activities like boating, fishing, and swimming. If planning to put up your tents here, check out the Manor Area Campground or William Houck Campground.
Flowing amidst the scenic river valley, you will find Raven Rock Falls in Gunpowder Falls State Park of north-central Maryland. Tumbling down from a height of 25 feet, it replicates a sliding board in appearance. You can ascend to the top of it, but you need to be extra cautious of the slippery rocks.
The surrounding shallow pools filled with rocks look inviting on a hot summer day for dipping in your feet.

Hiking & Other Activities: You can take the Gunpowder South Trail, which is about 2 miles from Hereford, rated moderately strenuous, engulfed in thick forest coverings, also providing magnificent views of the surrounding river valley.
Another key attraction in the Gunpowder Falls State Park is the Big and Small Gunpowder Falls. The sight of the cascading water gushing over rocks amidst the dense forests will for sure take your breath away. You can have an up-close view of it but beware of the mossy and slippery rocks.
If you want to explore further, you can check out the historic Jerusalem Mill Village, where the mill is now a visitor center. It also serves as the Gunpowder Falls State Park’s headquarters. You can also visit the 19th Century Joppa Iron Works occupying the park premises and get a glimpse at some of the antique ironworks still visible in the present times.

Hiking & Other Activities: The Big Gunpowder Falls Trail is about 9.2 miles long and is accessible to hikers of all skill levels. You will for sure get the opportunity to see various wildlife species and many scenic views along the trail. In addition, the state park has many exciting activities to offer, from fishing to kayaking, canoeing, to swimming.
Though the Paw Paw town falls in West Virginia, the Paw Paw Falls comes under the Maryland area. Walking through the historic tunnel of the 1800s in Allegany County of northwestern Maryland will bring you to the Paw Paw Falls. Do make sure to bring your flashlights while walking through its pitch darkness. There have been innumerable haunted tales of the tunnel, so if you happen to bump into any localites or perhaps a guide, do not miss out on those spooky tales. The waterfall dropping from the rock cliff encompassed with lush greenery is a sight to behold.

Hiking & Other Activities: There is no hiking needed, but for the 2-mile walk along the tunnel. However, you can still bring your kids along as the broad and firm boardwalk is not too difficult to cross.
One look at the Amos Falls will make you say that it’s more rapid than a waterfall. Located in Oakwood in north-eastern Maryland, it drops from a height of 20 feet. Also known as Smyth Falls, it cascades downstream from Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River, providing a marvelous view.
Nearest City: About 3.5 miles from Oakwood
Hiking & Other Activities: The hike to this waterfall is a difficult one. So, do not tread on it if you are a beginner, and also take the necessary steps to maintain your safety.
Gilpin’s Falls, located in Cecil County, is tucked amidst an overgrown forest. After hiking the rocky trail that requires you to cross fallen trees and slippery rocks, you will come across this gorgeous beauty. Another key attraction is the Gilpin’s Fall Covered Bridge, built in the mid-1800s crossing that would take you right up to the falls, giving you a clearer view.
Nearest City: About 9 miles from Elkton
Hiking & Other Activities: Behind the bridge lies the trail to the falls, which is not a long one, but pretty steep and rocky. After rains, they get slippery too, so one must maintain caution if visiting the falls during that time.
Muddy Creek Falls in Swallow Falls State Park in Oakland is the state’s largest single-drop waterfall plunging from a height of 53 feet. It gets its waters from the Youghiogheny River via the Muddy Creek. All around, you will find breathtaking views of the beautiful hemlock trees. You can get an up-close view of it, though when the water levels are high, you shouldn’t go closer lest it could lead to a mishap.

Hiking & Other Activities: The 1.5 mile Canyon Loop Trail will lead you to Muddy Creek Falls and a few more scenic waterfalls. There is enough to do and see in the state park, including hiking, nature gazing, and camping.
After relishing the beauty of Muddy Creek Falls, you can head to the relatively smaller Swallow Falls also in the Swallow Falls State Park. The falls were home to the swallow birds, hence getting their name from them. Whether summer or winter, you will get a spectacular view of the falls throughout the year.

Hiking & Other Activities: You can access the waterfall with the 1.5 mile Canyon Loop Trail. It is a moderately strenuous hike as you need to climb over rocks and fallen trees. You can rest for a while and enjoy a picnic in the designated area. If you wish to cool yourself, then go to the swimming hole at the Swallow Falls State Park for a refreshing dip.
Another awe-inspiring beauty within the Swallow Falls State Park, Tolliver Falls, is a serene and little one. After viewing the other two falls, you can come here and rest under the shady trees while soaking in its charms. Despite its size, it is a highly photogenic one. So don’t forget to bring your cameras to capture some breathtaking shots.

Hiking & Other Activities: You can reach the waterfall easily from the Herrington Lane entrance. It is a short and easy hike, with scenic vistas along the trail.
